GLP-1s

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is a hormone naturally produced in the body that normally is broken down within minutes of being made. Medications such as semaglutide are able to stimulate the activity of the GLP-1 receptor and resist being broken down as readily.

The beneficial effects of these medications in obesity and type 2 diabetes are due to several different actions in the body:

  1. Increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas after meals
  2. Slowing down the rate at which food passes through the stomach and intestines
  3. Preventing excessive sugar production in the liver
  4. Acting in the brain to promote a sense of fullness after meals

Our pharmacy can compound semaglutide into a transmucosal film which allows higher levels of semaglutide to be absorbed when placed in the inside of the mouth, avoiding difficulties with use that current injectables have for many patients.

Talk to our pharmacist to determine if transmucosal semaglutide film may be an option for you!
