Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is a hormone naturally produced in the body that normally is broken down within minutes of being made. Medications such as semaglutide are able to stimulate the activity of the GLP-1 receptor and resist being broken down as readily.
The beneficial effects of these medications in obesity and type 2 diabetes are due to several different actions in the body:
- Increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas after meals
- Slowing down the rate at which food passes through the stomach and intestines
- Preventing excessive sugar production in the liver
- Acting in the brain to promote a sense of fullness after meals
